All About Mental Health

Mental health is something that is near and dear to me. I suffer with both anxiety and depression and I have found that quite a lot of people shrug it off and tell me to get over it or “take a deep breath” thinking that it will magically make my anxiety or depression go away. I have also been told “You have great kids and a husband that is present.. what do you need to be depressed about?” Having a good life or everything you could ever want doesn’t automatically mean that you cannot be depressed.

I am going to be doing a mental health series on here next month where I will get more in depth to specific mental illnesses so today’s post will be a general post with information on help and stuff like that. The information that I am sharing can all be found here.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

There are many factors that can contribute to problems. Some of them are:

  • biological factors,
  • life experiences, and
  • family history.

If you, or someone you know, needs help or support there are many resources out there. A few of them are

  • Calling 911,
  • National Suicide Prevention Hotline (800) 273-8255,
  • SAMHSA Helpline (877) 726-4727, and
  • Veterans Crisis Line (800) 273-8255 Press 1

Mental health is a very serious matter and there is so much misunderstanding surrounding the topic. If someone you know is suffering from a mental illness do some research and learn about their illness and ways that you can help them. Sometimes what we think is the right thing to do or say is not always the best so it is important to learn about the individual illness and how they perceive things.

You will find more about mental health next month when my series starts. If you are interesting in participating in that series let me know!
