Being a Girl Mom

2007

At 18 when I was pregnant with our first baby we knew it was going to be a boy. On my husband’s side of the family there was one girl born in the last 80 years and it was my husband’s cousin. With all those boys I just knew we were going to continue on with that same pattern. I was totally okay with this and ready for the adventure of being a boy mom.

At 16 weeks with Autumn I was told they believed she had spina bifida and that we would need to go see a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist to get more in depth ultrasounds to see to what extent it was. The same day of that phone call I felt Autumn kick for the first time and I just knew she was telling me everything was going to be okay.

Our appointment was a couple days later with the MFMS and I was so nervous. I didn’t know what to expect and I didn’t really know what spina bifida was. I knew not to look into google because you always get worst case scenarios and I didn’t want to worry myself before knowing what our actual case looked like. We were in the waiting room waiting to be called back and I felt her kick again. It eased a bit of my worries but as a mom we always worry. Even when there’s nothing to worry about.

We get called back, I dress into the gown so we can get our US done. The dr walks in, greets us, and explains what he’d be looking for. I lay back, worried about what’s to come next.

The US seems to go on for forever before the dr says “I don’t see anything abnormal about your babies back. I do, however, see an ovarian cyst. I’m not too sure what they saw in your scans so I’m going to have them send them over to me for me to check out but from the scan I got today I don’t see anything wrong.” After a few tears are shed and my worries start slowly disappearing.. he asks us if we know what we’re having. We didn’t. Our anatomy scan was still 4.5 weeks away. He told us he knew and if we wanted to know he’d show us and let us know. Of course we said yes.. I mean.. we knew it was a boy but wanted to see anyway! Lol.

He starts doing the scan trying to get a good angle and when he finds it turns the screen towards us more and says “IT’S A GIRL!” We couldn’t believe it! My husband was so excited! I was in total shock. My gut feeling told me it was a boy so hearing it was a girl was completely shocking. It took a bit for it to sink in. But we were both extremely excited!

We are now pregnant with our second baby and this time I had no gut feelings. My pregnancy was completely opposite from mine with Autumn’s and most of the old wives tales claimed it was a boy. This time I wasn’t sure. Part of me thought it’d be a boy because we wouldn’t get lucky enough to have two girls when his family was so full of boys but the other part of me thought maybe since Autumn was a girl that we were just meant to have girls.

We went into our anatomy scan hoping for a boy (obviously a healthy baby is all that mattered) so we’d have one of each. We get called back, I lay down, and the scan starts. The tech gets all of her measurements and pictures and then asks if we want to know what the baby is. Again, duh! She shows us the anatomy and says “It’s a girl!” My husband was disappointed. He definitely wanted a boy since this was our last (or so we thought). Needless to say she’s very much loved and we adore her.

Two kids? Nah, let’s throw in a third! LOL!

My third pregnancy was, again, very different from the other two. Lots more pain, no appetite, no weight gain, etc. This time.. we both knew it was going to be a girl. I mean, we had two already and it wasn’t going to be any different this time.

We get called back, the scan starts, and she asks if we’d like to know what we’re having. We say yes and then came the “It’s a girl” we had heard twice before. We asked if she was absolutely sure and she said “yeah, that’s most definitely a girl.” This time I was disappointed. Aside from a healthy baby I really wanted a boy. It took me a bit to come around to having another girl.

What is it like being a girl mom??

Being a girl mom is not the same for every girl mom just like being a boy mom isn’t the same for every boy mom or mother of both. I thought being a girl mom would be full of princesses, dresses, big bows, pink, glitter, etc. My first seven years of being a girl mom was not like that. Autumn is a complete tomboy. She’s all into your typical “boy” stuff. Cars, guns, gokarts, video games, won’t be caught dead in a dress, etc. It wasn’t until Sophia came around when I got to experience what one would think girl mom life would be like. She’s the COMPLETE opposite of Autumn. She is always wearing dresses, princess crowns, nail polish, makeup, etc. This was a whole new experience for my husband and I and boy has it been an experience. We call her our sasshole. She’s sassy, dramatic, and allllllllllll girl. The two of them could not be any more different. Now we’ve got Ellie and I cannot wait to see what she’s like when she’s older. Well, I can wait because I don’t want her to grow up but I am excited to see what her personality is like when she’s older!

Are your kids anything alike? Or are they like mine and complete opposites? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time..

xoxo

  1. This is a very sweet post. I have three children too. As I was pregnant with my daughter, I was sure the baby would be a boy. Then, when I was pregnant with my son, I was sure it would be a girl. And when I was pregnant with my second son, I thought it would be a girl too. I am not very good at guessing…
